What is the difference between typical and non-typical whitetail?

A typical rack has a symmetrical frame with tines projecting from the top of each main beam in matched positions. A non-typical rack has substantial abnormal growth — drop tines, stickers, kickers, or extra points. The same antlers can be scored as either; non-typical scoring rewards the abnormal mass instead of penalizing it.

Which scoring system should I use — B&C or P&Y?

Accepted Answer

Use Pope & Young if you took the deer with archery equipment and want it in the bowhunting record book. Use Boone & Crockett for any legal method (rifle, muzzleloader, archery, crossbow). The measurements are identical; only the eligibility and minimums differ.

What are the qualifying minimums for whitetail?

Boone & Crockett: 170" net typical and 195" net non-typical for the all-time book (160" / 185" for the three-year Awards book). Pope & Young: 125" net typical and 150" net non-typical, archery-only.

Why does symmetry matter so much?

Typical scoring rewards a matched frame. For every measurement the left side has, there is a paired measurement on the right (beam length, each tine, each circumference). The absolute difference between paired measurements is deducted from the gross. A perfectly symmetrical rack carries every inch into the net score.

Can I rescore a non-typical buck as a typical?

Accepted Answer

Yes — and you should run both. A buck with light abnormal growth often scores higher as a typical (no abnormal-point bonus, but no penalty either). A buck with heavy stickers and drop tines almost always scores higher as a non-typical because the abnormal inches are added rather than deducted.
